2011 – 2012 Scheme of Work

Over the academic year, Year 7 pupils will rotate on the D&T carousel. They get to complete 4 major projects in Graphics, Textiles, Product Design (Materials) and Product Design (Food).

Introduction to Design and Technology

3 weeks

Health and Safety

  • Rules
  • Tools & Equipment

Classwork: How to work safely in D&T Work Rooms. How to create a Health and Safety poster.

Homework: Write a song, poem or rap about the Health and safety rules in D&T.

  • Health and Safety Legislations in industry.
  • Present their work to the whole Year Group.
  • Evaluate their work and suggest ways to improve.

 

Graphics Project

 9 weeks

Graphical Drawing Project

Graphical Drawing:

  • One Point Perspective
  • Isometric Drawing

Typography:

  • Font Types

Colour Theory:

  • Colour Wheel
  • Hue/Tone

Design Theory:

  • Production Types
  • Relief Printing

Classwork: All students will develop their Graphical Drawing skills in Yr 7.  This will aid to progress their design work through KS3 in D&T.

 

Homework: All students will create a presentation on a famous Designer.  This will be a 9 week project that will be handed in at the end of the carousel.

 

The most able students will learn:

  • How font and colour can be used to portray a tone.
  • How to attract a certain Target Market with their designs.
  • When it is appropriate to use 3D drawings to present a product.
  • How to use relief printing effectively to create background and foreground design.

Textiles Project           

9 weeks

Olympic 2012 Sports Wear Project

  • Design and Make Sports Wear for a 2012 Olympic Sports Person
  • CAD
  • Surface Decoration Techniques
  • Fabric Properties
  • Making - Hand and Sewing Machine

Classwork: Pupils will learn how to use ICT to create Image Boards based on an Olympic Sport Theme. Pupils will also explore different Surface Decoration Techniques and Fabrics.

 Homework: Pupils will learn how to use hand sewing techniques. They will also research the history of sportswear and the Olympics.

  • Pupils will learn how to evaluate their Image Boards and suggest ways to improve.
  • Pupils will learn how to write a detailed Product Analysis using ACCESS FMM.
  • Pupils will research Smart Materials used in the Textiles Industry.

 

Product Design 1(Materials)

9weeks

Historical/Sports Themed Wooden Puppet Project

  • Design and Make a wooden puppet toy based on a historical or sports personality.
  • Safety in the workshop.
  • Woods/plastic skills.
  • Material properties.

Classwork: Pupils will learn how to use research as inspiration for their own design ideas. They will then learn a range of hand tool skills within the workshop.

 Homework: Pupils will carry out a research project into a) the sports/historical personality that they have chosen and, b) the equipment that they have been using in class.

  • Pupils will learn to be constructively critical of their work and suggest their own areas for improvement.
  • Pupils will be able to create complex shapes with basic hand tools.
  • Become team leaders on practical activities.

 

Product Design 2- (Food)

9 weeks

Food Project

  • Food Hygiene
  • Food and Nutrition

Classwork: Pupils will learn basic food hygiene and create a basic food product

They will also learn some of the basic s of nutrition and good health

Homework:

Pupils will learn about how to make healthy choices by developing and presenting a healthy recipe booklet of fruit recipes

  • Health and Safety basic  requirements in food handling work places
  • Consequences of not eating a healthy diet
  • Food and the nutrition contained within the basic groups
