Key Topics
What will students learn?
What will the most able students learn?
Autumn 1
Presentations - About Me
This unit introduces the student to the concept of presenting information. They will be introduced to the basics of presentations with planning, organising, implementation and evaluation. From the first week they will begin to construct a presentation. Furthermore, each week they will learn advanced presentation skills to enhance their learning and ability to progress.
On completion of the unit students should:
  • Be able to plan and create a presentation about themselves
  • Be able to learn ‘fitness for purpose’ when using text, images and other ways to enhance a presentation
  • Be able to learn how to adapt a presentation for a specific audience
  • Be able to evaluate their presentation
On completion of the unit students should:
  • Be able to use consistent style and placement in presentations
  • Be able to use professional design ideas
  • Be able to evaluate their own and others work for improvements
Autumn 2
E-Safety – Protecting Yourself Online
This unit concentrates on teaching students the skills necessary to protect themselves from potential threats whilst online. Children spend increasing amounts of time communicating with their friends and other people on the internet. Social networking has brought worldwide contacts to children that were never considered before. Teaching children about the possible dangers and how to look after themselves is a vital skill in today’s society
On completion of the unit students should:
  • Be able to examine different ways to protect themselves using E-safety techniques
  • Be able to demonstrate increased awareness of their safety online
  • Understand the various ways to communicate safely online
On completion of the unit students should:
  • Be able to use consistent style and placement in DTP
  • Be able to use professional design ideas
  • Be able to evaluate their own and others work for improvements
Spring 1
Modelling - Spreadsheets
This unit introduces the student to the concept of modelling. They will be introduced to the basics of spreadsheets with planning, organising, implementation and evaluation. Each week has a general introduction to spreadsheets and the skills of organising information to be shown to an audience. Over the six weeks students will continue to enhance their spreadsheet abilities using progressively more complex instructions and skills sets. These will be refreshed each week with quizzes and Q&A’s.
On completion of the unit students should:
  • Be able to present information in different spreadsheet forms
  • Be able to show they are aware of the intended audience and the need for quality in their spreadsheet models
  • Be able to use ICT-based models and simulations to explore patterns and relationships
  • Be able to reflect critically in order to make improvements in their work
On completion of the unit students should:
  • Be able to use consistent style and placement in spreadsheets
  • Be able to use advanced formulas to solve problems
  • Be able to evaluate their own and others work for improvements
Spring 2
Podcasting using Audacity
Students will learn the technology of creating a news podcast (a newscast). They will be discussing one event which is in the news at the moment, research the subject fully and work together to plan the whole project so they understand the steps needed to complete the project. They will then produce a podcast on that topic and add effects and edit their newscast so it is professional. They will then evaluate and improve the finished product
On completion of the unit students should:
  • Understand what podcasting is and where it is used
  • Know the benefits of podcasting.
  • Be able to research a topic and plan a podcast
  • Be able to produce a professional sounding podcast
On completion of the unit students should:
  • Be able to use consistent style in sound files
  • Be able to use advanced sound techniques to solve problems
  • Be able to evaluate their own and others work for improvements
Summer 1
Super Heroes - Databases
Databases are a key component of the Key Stage 4 courses. Students must have the required skills to build, use and maintain a database. Databases are commonplace in students’ lives however much they do not realise it, including iTunes, Youtube and Google etc. Discussing the advantages and disadvantages of computerised and paper base databases like the Yellow Pages enables good discussion of the wider impact of ICT on society.

On completion of the unit students should:
  • Understand how databases are used in ICT to logically organise, store and retrieve information
  • Be able to find information from different website databases, check it is accuracy, reliability and acknowledge it
  • Be able to create forms and queries and use them appropriately
  • Be able to fully evaluate the purpose of databases in school and society
On completion of the unit students should:
  • Be able to use consistent and logical style in databases
  • Be able to use complex queries to solve problems
  • Be able to evaluate their own and others work for improvements
Summer 2
Super Heroes – Movie Maker
The unit builds from the previous one with them now producing a movie trailer for a new Superheroes movie using Windows Movie Maker. The aim of this unit is encourage students to use digital communication to share information and collaborate with others for a purpose. In addition to this the unit aims to get students to use a range of ICT tools efficiently to refine the presentation of information for a specific purpose.

On completion of the unit students should:
  • Be able to make evaluative comments on what makes a good movie trailer
  • Will learn how to import still images, video files and sound clips into Windows Movie Maker
  • Be able to evaluate the success of their movie trailer and identify areas for improvement
On completion of the unit students should:
  • Be able to use consistent style in movie files
  • Be able to use advanced video and sound techniques to solve problems
  • Be able to evaluate their own and others work for improvements
