This is the Curriculum Overview for Art.  A Long Term Plan for each year group can be viewed below.  Links to the homework and breakdowns of each unit (Medium Term Plans) are made available by the start of each half-term.

Year 7

Autumn 1

Observational drawing and painting skills  

Students spend summer 1 learning how to paint and draw the eye in detail. Students will begin to look at different cultural patterns and will reflect on their own identity. They will develop their eye design by looking at the artist Florian Nicolle.

During the first two weeks of year 7, students will spend their lessons creating a self - portrait in the style of Julian Opie as a way of getting to know one another

Autumn 2

Making & Evaluating

Students will draw and paint their eye onto their final piece. Students will collage cultural patterns that represent themselves into the iris. Students will learn about colour theory to make their design more eye-catching

Spring 1

Design Development of Totem Pole

Students spend Spring 1 learning about Native American Indians and the significance of totem poles. They will design a segment of a totem pole that they will later make, to form part of a whole class totem. Students will base their totem design on an animal that represents their chosen person or career. 

Assessment Focus

  • Animal design in the style of Native American Indians.
  • Clarity and use of pattern

Spring 2

Making of totem pole in clay

Students will learn how to handle clay and how to sculpt and build with it. Students will sculpt their totem pole using the slab building technique. Students will carve and engrave patterns into their totem pole. All totems will be fired and painted.

Summer 1

Observational drawing and painting skills

Students spend Autumn 1 drawing and painting different animal features that they will use to create their mythological creature. Students will collage the head and bodies of different animals together to create their morphed animal. They develop the design for their animal by looking at Greek mythology and at the contemporary artist David Chan.

Assessment Focus

  • Observational drawing of an animal’s head and body
  • Artist understanding of David Chan
  • Understanding of collage technique and precision of collaged animal

Summer 2

Observational drawing and painting skills

Students will pretend they are space explorers and will design and draw a science fiction building within space for their animal to live in. Students learn how to use different media to create a space scene sky to complete their animal background.

Year 8

Autumn 1

💾  CLAY FISH DESIGNS

Students will spend Autumn 1 studying different fish and sea life. They will design a clay fish in the style of Paul Klee. Students will learn how to add pattern and texture into their work

  • Ability to design a 3d sculpture on paper
  • Understanding of Paul Klee’s work

Autumn 2

💾  MAKING CLAY FISH

Students will learn how to make a clay fish using the coil and slab building technique. Students will learn how to use clay to sculpt their design and how to use different clay techniques to embellish their fish. All work will be fired and painted.

Spring 1

Characteristics of Leonardo Da Vinci’s work

Students will spend Spring 1 learning about Leonardo Da Vinci – the artist and inventor. They will make hand drawings from observation

Spring 2

Observational drawings and use of pattern

💾  LEONARDO DA VINCI CONTINUED

Students will consider how Leonardo – if alive today would probably be ‘ahead of the game’ and be investigating artificial intelligence. Students will combine patterns found in microchips into areas of a hand drawing as if skin peeled back – ‘terminator’ style.

Assessment Focus

  • Observational drawing of final outcome
  • Use of pattern and tone in final piece

Summer 1

💾  POP ART

Students spend Summer 1 looking at the characteristics of Pop Art and colour theory in-depth. Students will base their artwork on Roy Lichtenstein and Peter Max. Students will learn how to draw a portrait accurately.

  • Understanding of colour theory

Summer 2

💾  POP ART CONTINUED

Students spend Summer 2 working on their final outcome. Students will select 2 or 3 people from British History and will draw them brightly coloured in the style of Peter Max. Students will use pattern to decorate the background, again in the style of Peter Max.

  • Observational drawing of famous faces
  • Use of pattern and colour in the final piece

💾  DRAWING AND PAINTING

Students will spend Autumn 1 learning about Analytical Cubism. Students will make drawings of instruments in different media and use these to create an A2 Cubist painting.

  • Confidence in handling a range of media (A02)
  • Ability to add tone and detail to instruments (A03)
  • How well students interpret the Analytical Cubist style in their painting (A04)

Autumn 2

Students will spend Autumn 2 looking at Synthetic Cubism. They will complete an A2 collage in the style of Synthetic Cubism.

  • Ability to add tone and detail to instruments (A03)
  • Precision of collage (A04)
  • How well students interpret  the Synthetic Cubist style into their collage (A04)

Spring 1

Exam Prep and Exam

Students will spend the first 8 weeks of Spring 1 preparing for their exam. Students will be given an exam theme set by the exam board. They will need to submit and complete an A4 sketchbook that documents the design process, material testing and artist references.

Spring 2

Examination

Students will sit their 10 hour art exam. The exam piece and sketchbook/all preparatory work counts for 40% of their final mark.
