This is the Curriculum Overview for Economics.  A Long Term Plan for each year group can be viewed by opening each section below.  Links to the homework and a breakdowns for each unit (Medium Term Plan) will be made available by the start of each half-term.

Year 9

Autumn 1

💾  ECONOMIC FOUNDATIONS

Assessment Focus

Students look at the nature and purpose of economic activity based on the production of goods and services and the satisfaction of needs and wants. Students explore the factors of production, leading to an understanding of how and why choices are made. Students will come to an understanding that there is always a cost attached to any economic choice. 

 

 

Autumn 2

💾  RESOURCE ALLOCATION

Assessment Focus

Students look at the role of markets in allocating scarce resources. This leads into exploration of the different economic sectors and concludes with a look at benefits and costs of specialization, the division of labour and how this naturally leads to exchange. 

 

 

Spring 1

💾  HOW PRICES ARE DETERMINED

Assessment Focus

Students explore how prices are determined in a market using supply and demand. They look at intermarket relationships to understand the impact that changes in supply and demand in one market can have on other markets. The section concludes with an investigation of price elasticities, including how they are calculated and interpreted. 

 

 

Spring 2

💾  PRODUCTION COSTS, REVENUE AND PROFIT

Assessment Focus

Students explore the significance of costs, revenue and profits for producers, leading to an understanding of the significance of productivity on increasing profits. Students explore the concept of economies of scale and the benefits these can bring.

 

 

Summer 1

💾  COMPETATIVE AND CONCENTRATED MARKETS

Assessment Focus

Students come to an understanding that there are different types of market structures and explore competitive and non-competitive markets. Finally, students will look at the operation of labour market factors that determine wages.

 

 

Summer 2

💾  MARKET FAILURE

Assessment Focus

Students explore the meaning of market failure and gain an understanding that the market mechanism does not always allocate resources efficiently. Students will explore the costs associated with misallocation of resources, and how government intervention can counter this.

Year 10

Autumn 1

Scarcity and the basic economic problem. Opportunity cost. Supply and demand. Markets and equilibrium. Competition and consumer sovereignty. The nature and purpose of work. Wage determination and the supply of labour.

💾  OPPORTUNITY COST

Assessment Focus

Understanding initial key concepts in economics. Exam technique with an emphasis on consistent use of subject specific lexis. Answering in context.

 

 

Autumn 2

The personal life cycle and its impact on demand. Risk, reward and interest rates. Methods of saving. Methods of borrowing. Managing your money. The costs of unemployment.  

💾  RISK AND REWARD

Assessment Focus

Understanding key concepts involving work and leisure, unemployment and government policy. Emphasis on evaluation and exam technique in relation to 12 mark questions.

 

 

Spring 1

💾  EXAM TECHNIQUES

Assessment Focus

Quality of in context analysis. Showing a clear chain of reasoning. Coming to a well-supported judgment. 

 

 

Spring 2

💾  International trade, imports exports and the balance of payments. Advantages and disadvantages of trade to the UK economy. Exchange rates.

Immigration and emigration – the costs and benefits.

Quality of in context analysis. Showing a clear chain of reasoning. Coming to a well-supported judgment. 

 

 

Summer 1

Year 11

Autumn 1

The 4 macro economic objectives. Growth in GDP, full employment, stable prices and the balance of payments. We will also examine conflicts of different economic objectives and hence evaluate their relative importance.  

💾  GROWN IN GDP

Assessment Focus

Answering in context. 2, 6 and 12 mark questions.

 

 

Autumn 2

Keynesian economics. Fiscal and monetary policy instruments, their uses and importance to the UK economy.  Supply side policies and long term growth. We will also examine inequality and the welfare state and the different types of economic structure. Finally we shall analyse market failure in terms of both competition and externalities.  

💾  MONETARY POLICY INSTRUMENTS

Assessment Focus

Analysis and evaluation. Developing a clear chain of reasoning to show a depth of understanding and coming to a well supported judgment.

 

 

Spring 1

The role of the European union and current economic issues. The current economic issues content will centre around a pre released topic and students will be expected to perform independent research and analysis on a given specialism.

Research skills and analysis.

 

 

Spring 2

The basic economic problem and supply and demand. Equilibrium and the market mechanism.

Macroeconomic functions. Definitions, essay structure and explanations. Multiple choice.

 

 

Autumn 2

Aggregate supply. Aggregate demand and supply. Macroeconomic equilibrium. Fiscal policy. Monetary policy. Supply side policy. Policy conflicts.

Elasticity’s and the effect of direct and indirect taxation. 

Assessment Focus

Macroeconomic functions. Definitions, essay structure and explanations with an emphasis on evaluation of real world policy decisions.

Problems in agricultural markets (applied elasticity). Costs, the law of diminishing returns and returns to scale, productive and allocative efficiency.

The theory of the firm. Monopoly Vs. perfect competition. Monopsony and monopolistic competition. Oligopoly, collusion, cartels and basic game theory. Contestable markets and integration.
