Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education
At Harris Academy Purley, students receive 30 minutes of Tutor Time each morning, led by their form tutor, as a consistent space for personal development alongside academic routines. This programme is built around PSHE (including statutory Relationships, Sex and Health Education) and is taught through a spiral curriculum in Years 7–11, revisiting core learning on health and wellbeing, relationships, and living in the wider world (including careers, financial understanding and citizenship) in an age-appropriate way that becomes progressively more detailed and mature each year. Tutor Time places particular emphasis on Healthy Harris, Citizenship and PSHE, helping pupils build healthy habits, understand rights and responsibilities, and develop the knowledge and confidence to make informed choices, while reinforcing safeguarding messages in line with Keeping Children Safe in Education.
Students complete PSHE work in a termly Tutor Time booklet sample.
Healthy Harris
Healthy Harris is our cross-curricular approach to health and wellbeing, bringing together physical fitness, nutrition and diet, and mental health through curriculum subjects, assemblies and tutor time. It is designed to give students practical knowledge and strategies for a healthy, fulfilling life, with learning that reflects the real challenges young people may face as they grow up. Across the year, students explore topics such as healthy active lifestyles, sleep and healthy eating, managing stress and anxiety, and positive coping strategies for self-harm, alongside safeguarding and personal safety themes including bullying and online safety, exploitation and county lines, extremism and radicalisation (Prevent), weapons, domestic abuse, and recognising and responding to harm (including violence against women and girls).

Citizenship
Citizenship helps students understand how society works, what it means to be an active and responsible citizen, and how to use their voice respectfully and effectively. Across the year, students explore themes such as Human Rights (including the rule of law, justice, morality and fundamental British values), Democracy (how the UK is governed, Parliament and elections), and Careers (pathways and employability skills to support future choices). They also develop the skills to navigate the modern world through units such as British Values (identity, diversity, individual liberty and the UK constitution), Media & Ideas (media bias, propaganda, privacy and evaluating information), and Making Change (lobbying, petitions, protest and collective action to improve society).

PSHE
PSHE (Personal, Social, Health and Economic education) helps students build the knowledge, skills and attitudes they need to stay safe, healthy and ready for adult life. Across the year, students follow themed units that develop in age-appropriate depth as they move through the school: “Holding Hands” introduces students to our shared culture, values and key safeguarding messages; “My Relationships” explores how we interact with others (including friendships, consent and discrimination); “My Body” focuses on physical health and growing up (including puberty and health choices); “My Feelings” develops understanding of romantic and sexual relationships and safety; “My Wellbeing” covers mental wellbeing alongside economic wellbeing such as managing money; and “My Safety” teaches strategies for staying safe online, in the community, and as risks change with age.
