Mr Johnson
Mr Johnson joined our Academy seven years ago, after moving to the UK from the Caribbean. He is currently Head of Mathematics.
I became a teacher because I care about helping students understand things they once thought they couldn’t.
I enjoy seeing that moment when something finally clicks and confidence grows. Teaching maths allows me to challenge students, support them, and help them believe in their own ability to be problem solvers.
I ended up working at HAPU after moving from the Caribbean, where education and discipline were always highly valued. I was looking for a school with strong expectations, clear structure, and a genuine commitment to students achieving their best, and HAPU immediately stood out. The focus on consistent teaching, high‑quality maths provision, diversity, and shared values made it feel like the right place for me to continue growing as a teacher with strong SLT support while making a real impact on students’ Maths progress.
This is the first school I’ve worked in since moving to the UK, and from the very beginning I felt welcomed, supported, and aligned with the school’s high expectations. I really value the calm, purposeful behaviour of the students and the consistency across the school, which creates an environment where teaching and learning can thrive. I have been here seven (7) years now and HAPU feels like a place where I can continue to grow as a maths teacher, make a real difference, and honestly, I don’t see myself leaving anytime soon.
HAPU has clear support and development structures, with consistent expectations, regular feedback, and strong CPD through both the school and the Federation. As someone new to the UK system, this was especially helpful in my early years, as mentoring and departmental support helped me quickly adapt to GCSE specifications, assessment, and classroom routines. That guidance and ongoing coaching have played a key role in my development and confidence as a maths teacher.
I’d absolutely recommend applying to HAPU. It’s a school with high expectations, calm behaviour, and strong support, where teachers are trusted and developed properly. If you’re looking for a place where you can grow, feel supported, and genuinely enjoy teaching, this is it.
