Sociology
Key Stage 5 (Year 12 & 13)
We teach and assess approximately 50% of the course (Paper 1 and some of paper 2) in Year 12. This allows Year 13 to be used more effectively for skills-focused revision and preparation for the final exams. The modules selected for first teaching provide an excellent foundation for the remaining topics, and the sequence of delivery allows for interleaving of knowledge and meaningful synoptic links.
In Year 13, we deliver and assess half of paper two and Paper 3, while actively promoting synoptic links across all three exam papers. Students are expected to develop a secure understanding of the major sociological perspectives that underpin Sociology, recognising each perspective’s key contributions, points of divergence, and areas of overlap. A critical and questioning mindset is essential: students should appreciate that while sociological theories offer valuable insights, all aspects of Sociology require rigorous evaluation. Students will build confidence in applying research methods and data analysis techniques to both familiar and novel contexts. They will also deepen their understanding of the key issues and debates within Sociology, drawing on knowledge from Year 12 and their current studies to explore and evaluate both sides of these debates.
